FERRYMAN

ABOUT

Ferryman is a Gaff cutter built in 1949 along the lines of the Itchen Ferry Boats.

A little about Ferryman:

Ferryman was built at the then decommissioned HMS Tormentor, Warsash, on the river Hamble in 1949. The hull shape is based on that of the Itchen ferry’s That were once common place in that area. Ferryman’s hull was of larch on oak with pine and canvas decks. From new Ferryman was rigged as a gaff cutter. Originally ferryman was fitted with a Stuart Turner petrol engine, later this was a kabuta diesel. Ferryman’s concept was to try to compete with the more expensive private yachts around at the time. Ferryman cost £960 instead of £1260 that the Hilyards would have cost.
Now as part of the restoration Ferryman will be far more eco. While electric engines and solar panels will make up a part of this a large part of this eco will be to turn back to more traditional methods and to simply do without…
As a result ferryman will be sailed / sculled where possible and much of the very unnecessary electrics found on modern boats will not be found aboard.
